COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

As part of our annual celebration each year, we invite local groups who have shared their art to speak at the Artists' Reception. Community highlights focus on people working together here in Milwaukee to show up, hold space, stand for equity and justice, and generate power in community.

Due to COVID-19, we were not able to host the Artists' Reception.

We invite all viewers here to explore the awesome, ongoing work of:

HIR Wellness Institute

LUNA Collective

R.A.R.A.S Collective

This year, we were honored to have the HIR Wellness Institute join us as our non-profit partner. Their Daughters of Tradition group created four collaborative paintings under the collective title, The Light of the 8th Generation

"This piece symbolizes a reflective practice of cultivating love, healing and justice for the land and the people."

We strongly encourage all to read their full artist statement when viewing their work!

HIR Wellness Institute Mission: Establish a social justice informed culturally rooted, and Intergenerational Healing Approach™ that improves mental health and wellness outcomes to Indigenous and underserved communities.

Out of a call to action and inspired by the teachings of Elder Coyhis, our founder, CEO, and Clinical Director, Lea S. Denny started the The Daughters of Tradition (DOT) group for Native girls in 2017 and continues to co-facilitate and inform our circles. DOT is an intergenerational sisterhood group that aims to build leadership and positive self-esteem through talking circles, curriculum activities, and community activities. It provides an opportunity for girls to learn about Wisconsin Tribes, sacred medicines, and teachings from invited peers, mothers, aunties, Elders, and other guests. Daughters of Tradition offers new ways to increase coping skills, build positive self-esteem, and develop communication skills. The group helps girls focus on ways to create lasting and healthy relationships, learn how to support each other's needs, how to activate social change in their communities, and create memories and sisterhood with one another.

We are likewise deeply grateful to share individual works created by members of both the

  LUNA Collective and R.A.R.A.S Collective

who are independently working in Milwaukee to amplify Latinx voices through the arts and creative community building and empowerment.
